Agenda for the WLC2014 is Rapidly Forming

WLC U.S.A Day! September 10, 2014 – What happens on this campus could change the world
When the World Leisure Congress convenes in the U.S. this September, one of the most memorable days will be spent on the campus of the University of South Alabama.  On Wednesday, September 10th, We’re honored by a welcome from the Governor of Alabama and the President of the University before we delve into the day’s topic: Emerging Technologies.” How do they help us plan, live and measure better?

The Uber Urban Environment
Did you check in on foursquare today? Accessed a traffic report on your way out of town? Glad you saw that post on the downed tree near your favorite cafe? The Massachusetts Institute of Technology recognizes how modern communication is reshaping city life. In response, the SENSEable City Lab was launched to study the built environment.

Using sensors and hand-held electronics, this MIT research initiative measures everything from air pollution to traffic patterns to communications everywhere from Hong Kong to Rio to Boston. WLC Keynote speaker,  Anthony Vanky is one of those researchers here to share how the Lab’s work impacts the world of leisure.

What’s Trending in the World of Leisure?
With 9,000 international contributors investigating where cultures are heading, WikiTrends.org Editor and the Avant-Guide Institute Director, Daniel Levine, is the epitome of a global expert.  He’ll share emerging lifestyle and tourism tendencies with enough wit to keep you captivated and enough wisdom to help you set trends in your own community.

Setting Records!
Guinness World Records has been capturing the world’s imagination and leisure time for nearly 60 years. The company’s President of Greater China, Rowan Simons, provides a unique perspective of superlative leisure performance. He’ll also verify WLC’s own attempt to line-dance our way into the record books!

LEISURE Legend:  Hank Aaron Named Honorary Chairman for 2014 Mobile Bay World Leisure Congress

registernow picHome of international corporations, baseball history and America’s first Mardi Gras, Mobile knows how to work and play hard. In 2014, thousands of leisure experts from around the world are coming to learn firsthand about Mobile’s legendary leisure and about one of its baseball heroes – Hank Aaron. A Mobile native, Hank Aaron has been named the honorary chairman for this international gathering.

“These international guests will experience our culture, natural resources, and recreational opportunities while learning about Mobile’s ability to overcome adversity,” said Mike Dow, former Mayor of Mobile and Chairman of the 2014 Mobile Bay World Leisure Congress. “Hank Aaron is a tremendous ambassador for Mobile, baseball and leisure, in general,” said Dow. “He has overcome adversity, as our region has, and together we hope to improve the health and happiness of the area. As the first host city in the United States, we have a tremendous opportunity to improve our city, the region and the world.”

“Baseball legend Hank Aaron has graciously agreed to serve as Honorary Chair for the 2014 Mobile Bay World Leisure Congress,” said Bill Shanahan, president of Mobile BayBears Professional Baseball Club. “Having hit 755 home runs, Hammerin’ Hank has taken leisure to a legendary level and is a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame,” said Shanahan.

Aaron serves as Senior Vice President with the Atlanta Braves, the team he played for professionally. Mobile’s baseball stadium is named after Aaron and his childhood home has been relocated to  the stadium as a museum.

“Mobile is entrenched in its diverse culture, dating more than 300 years ago. The vibrancy of our historic city and its culture has propelled Mobile today as one of the nation’s fastest growing global cities,” said Mayor Sam Jones, City of Mobile. “Our ability to build a team of stakeholders has helped in recruiting such global companies as ThyssenKrupp, Austal and most recently Airbus to our region, creating an environment where leisure will be paramount in the city’s pursuit for continued enhancement of quality of life initiatives. We applaud the leaders of the World Leisure Organization for selecting Mobile for its 2014 bi-annual Congress.

With the help of baseball great, Hank Aaron, and the others who are working diligently to make the World Leisure Congress a success, Mobile is looking forward to adding the World Leisure Organization as its newest global partner and stand ready to welcome the world to South Alabama. The partnership will certainly be a tremendous opportunity for all citizens to take advantage of leisure and healthy amenities.”

Creating A Lasting Legacy….
The World Leisure Organization will hold its biannual Congress in Mobile, Alabama Sept. 7–12, 2014. This will be the first time the event is held in the United States and 1,500 to 2,000 attendees and exhibitors from more than 40 counties are expected to attend.

“This is not a typical organization or a standard sponsorship opportunity,” said Derek Casey, Chair, Board of Directors, World Leisure Organization.“ The World Leisure Organization believes leisure improves the quality of life for all.

Each World Leisure Congress leaves a lasting legacy that will positively impact the community for generations. In South Korea, multiple leisure facilities were built, including stadiums, tennis facilities and an inline staking rink.”

Mobile is looking at a multi-prong approach as a lasting legacy, according to Dow. “We are investigating national funding and sponsorship options to help make a significant improvement for the Mobile Bay area,” said Dow. “Whether it is community gardens or improved access to sports and other leisure activities, we want to plant the seeds to help Mobile grow into an even healthier international success story. Lots of hard work has already taken place to successfully land this World Leisure Congress and our opportunities as a result of hosting it are endless.

Mobilians and others along the Gulf Coast will have a change to improve our quality of life.”

About The World Leisure Organization
Founded in 1952, World Leisure is a world-wide, non-governmental association of persons and organizations dedicated to discovering and fostering those conditions best permitting leisure to serve as a force for human growth, development and well-being.

Access to meaningful leisure experiences is no less than the need for shelter, education, employment and fundamental health care. Yet, improving the quality of life does not occur by chance. Rather it happens through the joint efforts of our policy makers, our leisure professionals, and our public and private sector program providers.

The World Leisure Congress is a tremendous opportunity for sponsors to reach leisure decision makers and to be showcased internationally. A Mobile delegation will be attending the Rimini, Italy WLO this fall and encourage attendance at the 2014 event in the United States. They also will be promoting sponsors who are already finalized for 2014 WLO Congress. Mobile Bay had an award winning exhibition in 2011 at the World Leisure Expo in China and the area also had representation at the 2010 World Leisure Congress in South Korea.

Why Was Mobile Selected?
“This will be the first time that the World Leisure Congress will be held in the United States,” said Christopher Edginton, Secretary General, World Leisure Organization. “Mobile was chosen because leisure activities abound in Mobile including some of America’s best museums, festivals, antique shops and historical landmarks, because Mobile has been identified as one of the world’s top eight water cities and has the fourth largest estuary system in the US, allowing for an abundance of wildlife and habitats, creating a fascinating ecosystem,” said Edginton.

“Mobile Bay’s numerous natural resources, including parks, waterways among others make it an ideal setting for outdoor recreation.”

What Does the World Leisure Organization Do?
WLO fosters inquiry:  Research and scholarship to discover the personal and social potentialities of leisure experiences.
WLO shares what they know:  Formal and informal dissemination of knowledge and information.
WLO engages in informed advocacy:  By advocating for conditions optimizing leisure experiences: legislation, infrastructure, leadership, and programming.
